Complexity is the enemy of execution…
This quote has been rolling around in my mind for a couple of days, and its amazing how true the statement is. I see evidence of this in action every day. It makes me think of my wife especially. She will be the first to tell you, if something takes too much effort to learn, or is just too complex, she will lose interest in it. I feel like this goes almost more so for our nutrition. While sitting down and actually calculating out your individual macros is by far the most effective and predictable thing you can do for your fitness goals, the vast majority of people have absolutely no clue how. People do not what to spend hours watching video’s and reading articles learning the basics of macronutrient calculation or spend hours measuring out each serving to the gram. Luckily for us it doesn’t have to be that complicated. Here are some quick tips for taking the complexity out of your diet.
Have a plan
Probably the biggest advantage you can give yourself is to plan ahead. Do not wait till you are standing in the grocery store to begin thinking about what you’re going to eat for the next week. Make out a grocery list for the week, so you know exactly what you are going to buy. This will not only help keep you away from the ice cream isle but could also save you a shocking amount of money!
Having a general meal plan for the week will also help you save time during your week. It will help you develop healthy “go-to” habits as you progress deeper into your fitness journey. You’ll find yourself thinking more about the kinds of food you “planned” to eat rather than looking for the bag of chips in the cupboard.
Cook in bulk
When you cook something, cook enough for the week. This will take all the guess work out of your diet and save you a ton of time and stress. We live in such a fast-paced society today, that no body has time to cook every meal from scratch every day. It’s such a good feeling knowing you can open your fridge and grab some food on the go!
Prep your meals
This one is huge for me because it allows me to practice healthy portion control without having to spend too much time thinking about it. Whether you pre-pack your meals after dinner for the next day, or do an entire week at a time, this gives you complete control over your eating habits so during your weak times throughout the week, you wont have to worry about caving into a craving or over eating.
With any diet you choose to do practice makes perfect. The longer you do it, the more natural it feels, and the easier it gets because you will be picking up little tricks like these here and there. Eventually you won’t even be thinking about it, and you’ll find yourself just doing things the right way. Complexity truly is the enemy of execution, but if you can just get yourself to take that first blind step, you will find direction will evolve.
